NATIONAL KITE FLYING DAY

BOY SCOUTS DAY

NATIONAL KITE FLYING DAY

Have you ever flown a kite? I remember in school one of our teachers had a kite flying contest. We had to design and make our own kite. Remember this was before Google, it was a lot harder to find information, you needed to actually GO to the library and do some research on kites, the best one and then how to make it.

I found out that box kites were great at getting the lift I was wanting and seemed pretty easy to make. A few dowels, tape, trash bag and I was good to go. I put mine together and went to school very excitedly (I didn’t usually care for school). It was finally time to have our contest and I WON!!! I was so excited, there were so many really cool looking kites. But, my little trash bag and dowels box kite won. I can’t really remember what I won, I was just happy that mine won and it was a lot of fun.

HISTORY

Though we couldn’t find any information about the origin of National Kite Flying Day. Kites were invented in China, where materials ideal for kite building were readily available: silk fabric for sail material; fine, high-tensile-strength silk for flying line; and resilient bamboo for a strong, lightweight framework. –source

FUN FACT

The largest kite ever flown, has a total lifting area of 10,225.7 ft. When laid flat, it has a total area of 10,968.4 ft. The kite measured 83 ft 7 in. long and 131ft 3 in. wide. The kite was made by Abdulrahman Al Farsi and Faris Al Farsi and flown at the Kuwait Hala Festival in Flag Square, Kuwait City, Kuwait on February 2005. -source

BOY SCOUTS DAY

In my Aunt’s younger years she was a Den Mom to one of the local Boy Scout Trouts in our area. She loved that role and loved her boys. She has always been an “outside” person and taught her nieces and nephews how to make a campfire, tie knots and many other survival skills.

Through the years, she had to give it up as she got older and it was harder to get around. But, she loved those days.
