It’s that time again, my birthday!!! A Birthday is always a good time for reflection. Some years I am excited about it, other years, it just goes by without me thinking too much about it and still other years I almost dread it. Why is there so much emotion in a day, it’s just another day, except it shows that we are getting older, our kids are getting older and there is change, so much change.
Do you remember your birthday when you were a kid? Did you celebrate big with a party with all your friends and family around celebrating with you? Or did you have a quiet birthday, your family maybe a few close friends to enjoy cake and ice cream with? However you celebrated I am sure you had cake, ice cream and a few gifts to open excitedly. You probably couldn’t sleep the night before because you were so full of excitement for your birthday! (At least that was me as a kid)
My birthday as a kid was spent going to school (ugh) if it was a weekday and in the evening, my Grandparents and Aunt would come over for cake and ice cream. My Grandfather’s birthday was on the 22nd, so he and I always got to celebrate together. Not a birthday goes by without me thinking of my Grandpa’s birthday as well. Gramma, like most Gramma’s, was a terrific cook/baker. She always made us Grandkids feel so special, by baking our favorite dessert for our birthday. Gramma and Grampa would stop in on our birthday to deliver the homebaked goodies and spend some special time with us. I think each of us kids had a different favorite of hers, and she always knew without asking what it was.
For me, as I reflect on my birthday, I tend to think back in the past and remember those regrets that I wish were not there. I feel some of the hurts, and pain from years past. I also look into the future and have hopes and dreams, and concerns for things that might happen.
Today, I know that it doesn’t matter what people think of you. Too many times, we dress a certain way, talk a certain way, behave a way that we feel will help us “fit in”. The world is full of people that “just want to fit in”. I don’t! I want to stand out! No, not in a ridiculous, obnoxious way. But, in a way that says to others, “Hey, she knows who she is and what she stands for”. My opinion matters as much as anyone else, and my God says I am Loved and Accepted. That’s all I need!
I also remember that My God is in everything! Oh, I was taught that as a teenager, but I never had any struggles, I mean really hard struggles. Until life started to happen… Losing a child, miscarriages, loss of a job, moving, loss of family members, money struggles, just to name a few. Many of these are some of the same that others struggle with on a daily basis. It’s hard!
But, looking back, I KNOW without a doubt that My God was right there, all the way. Directly, guiding, comforting. And even recently I see His Hand moving in my daily life. Maybe that is because I am actively looking for it! I know He is in the daily and wants us to invite Him into our daily activities. He wants to help make our path straight and guide us in each step of the way.
Proverbs 3:5,6 Trust God from the bottom of your heart;The Message
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
He’s the one who will keep you on track.
So, today, on my birthday, I am confessing that I am no longer staying quiet when I need to SPEAK UP, I will no longer not acknowledge when I SEE a “God Moment” and He shows Himself to me, I will be bold and STAND OUT! When I am afraid, I will SPEAK out loud of His Faithfulness and His Promises. He has called us to be People that STAND OUT and not to blend in with the world.
Romans 12: 1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.The Message
I hope you will find some encouragement today and that you might also decide to STAND OUT For God and look for Him in your every day by seeing “God Moments” in your life and those around you.
